Solaris is a 1961 science fiction novel by Polish writer Stanisław Lem. It follows a crew of scientists on a research station as they attempt to understand an extraterrestrial intelligence, which takes the form of a vast ocean on the titular alien planet. The novel is one of Lem's best-known works. The book has been adapted numerous times for film, radio, and theater. Prominent film adaptations include Andrei Tarkovsky's 1972 version and Steven Soderbergh's 2002 version, although Lem later remarked that none of these films reflected the book's thematic emphasis on the limitations of human rationality.

A sci-fi novel where scientists confront a living planet that defies all attempts to understand it.

This classic is set on a planet that is, somehow, alive? That is, the planet-wide ocean seems to be one "living" entity, simply because it does things that non-living matter never does. It senses and responds, creates complex structures on a monumental scale, yet follows no discernible logic and resists all attempts at communication. The story follows a small group of scientists stationed there, as they encounter yet another baffling phenomenon: people from their past memories come to visit them, seemingly animated out of thing air. They struggle to understand what's going on and what to do about it, in the midst of the personal turmoil that these apparitions stir up.

This is a real page-turner, filled with tense emotion and extraordinary images of a truly alien world. It explores what it would be …
